2.2. Configuring the Ethernet Interface

2.2.1. Select Configure

Start Sysinstall and proceed until you reach the Sysinstall Main Menu. Select the Configure option from the Main Menu. This may look confusing since it refers to “post-install” but it is the correct choice.

2.2.2. Select Networking

The FreeBSD Configuration Menu will display. Select Networking and press ENTER.

2.2.3. Select Ethernet Interface

Select the appropriate ethernet interface from the menu. In this example, ed0 is the ethernet device which connects to the DSL modem.

2.2.4. Configure Ethernet Interface

                      User Confirmation Requested
       Do you want to try IPv6 configuration of the interface?
                             
                              Yes   [ No ]

                             User Confirmation Requested
        Do you want to try DHCP configuration of the interface?

                              Yes   [ No ]

Enter the appropriate information as shown above. Leave the IPv4 Gateway and the IPv4 Address blank. This is an Ugly Method (tm) and will produce a few warnings but it will allow connection using PPPoE.

Answer [ Yes ] to the following message:

              User Confirmation Requested
Would you like to bring the ed0 interface up right now?
                 [ Yes ]         No

There will be a message indicating that insufficient information was provided. This is ignored. Press [ OK ] to continue.

                          Message
The ed0 device is not configured.  You will need to do so
in the Networking configuration menu before proceeding.
                       [ OK ]

The following message looks ominous, but likewise is ignored. Press [ OK ] to continue.

               Message
Initialization of ed0 device failed.
             [ OK ]

exit the Network services Menu
